Sweet Potatoe Pie Filling

I am an excellent cook...not so great as a baker. I am attempting Sweet Potato pies again this year. I've been told that sweet potatoes are stringing, and in order to have a good pie you need to get the strings out of you mix. May question is what is the best method for removing string from your sweet potato mix? Thanks

-------------------------------

I usually use a hand-held mixer to remove strings from the sweet potatoes after they are cooked.

Mesh strainer

I used a mesh strainer. It doesn't allow the strings to go through. It was perfect!

After they are cooked, I will use a potato ricer. This will get the strings out. A potato ricer can be purchased at Bed Bath and beyond

How to remove strings in sweet potatoes
by: Southern Belle cook

To prevent the strings after boiling or baking sweet potatoes is to first cut both ends off. After the stringy ends have been cut off, place potato on a cutting board or cutting surface and use the knife to cut the entire thing horizontally slicing the entire potato into pieces. You won't have to worry about the strings once you put them in the mixer there will be no strings because they're chopped into small pieces. Make sure that you cut off at least 1/2 to 1 in off each ends, because that's where the most strings are.

Sweet Potatoe Pie Filling

After you put in all of your (selected) ingredients, place filling in a blender and blend well for 3 three to 5 five minutes. Pour mixture into pie crust. When you get to the bottom of the blender pitcher, the string will have all be at the bottom. Discard the very bottom parts where the strings will be.

No More Stringy Sweet Potatoes
by: Charlotte

After my filling is ready to be a pie, I put everything in a food processor! I process it for a minute or two - no more strings and you have a smooth creamy pie filling!

Strings in Sweet Potatoes
by: Kathy

This is the only guaranteed way to not have strings in your sweet potatoes, by rinsing your beaters off at least three times! Been doing this for years.

No Strings

I boil the potatoes with the skin on. When removing the skin, start at the ends and carefully pull the end away and the strings will come off.

Also, when mixing, rinse the beaters off several times to help remove the strings.

STRINGS IN PIE
by: Anonymous

I use a hand mixer. I mix the filling then rinse off my beaters. Repeat this approximately 3 times until no strings are left on the beaters.
