This apple crisp recipe is living proof that great tasting desserts don't necessarily have to be difficult to create.  With just minimal prep work, this simple apple crisp dessert recipe cooks up in just under 40 minutes. 

I first experienced apple crisp in elementary school and from the first bite I knew this dessert was something special. 

Throughout grade school and high school I ate this dessert at every opportunity and each time the dish tasted pretty much the same.

When I was older and left the mother's nest I sampled the dessert again while dining out at a local restaurant and the dish just didn't taste how I remembered it. 

So I looked around for some time until I found the recipe below that I will share with you today. 

No it doesn't taste like the apple crisp I enjoyed back in elementary or high school, it taste so much better.

Apple Crisp Dessert Recipe

Cooking Ingredients:

  • 5-6 medium baking apples, peeled, cored and sliced
  • 6 tablespoons softened butter
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2/3 to 3/4 cup firmly packed light brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup all purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup quick cooking oats
  • 3/4 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 3/4 teaspoon nutmeg

Cooking Instructions:

I like to use a combination of tart and sweet apples in my apple crisp dessert.  You may also want to consider this mix as well.  If you like this ideal, try 3 tart tasting Granny Smith apples and 3 Golden Delicious apples.

  1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit.
  2. Arrange prepared apples into greased 8 inch square pan or suitable baking dish.
  3. In a medium mixing bowl, combine softened butter, vanilla extract and all dry ingredients consisting or brown sugar, flour, oats, cinnamon and nutmeg. Mix and stir well then spread mixture evenly over sliced apples.
  4. Bake on center oven rake at 375 degrees Fahrenheit for 30 to 35 minutes until apples and tender and top of apple crisp is golden brown.

Allow apple dessert to cool a little while and served warm topped with whipped cream, vanilla ice cream or both
